Beer & Bike in Germany

Many of you may know that I, Bob, am spending most of my winter exploring Berlin and Germany with my family. Katy has taken a teaching job over here so we have set up a base from which to guide and scout tours. Lately I have been riding many of our routes along the Berlin to Copenhagen bikeway and the Berlin Wall trail. It is much colder right now than when you will be joining us for the rides in the summer. I have also been scouting a few new routes that I hope to have posted and share with you in the coming weeks.

Why Beer & Bike in Germany? Do you want more creativity than the core 3 ingredients in the Reinheitsgebot? Personally I love the different flavors yeast can provide and also love some of the additives and sours that make Belgian and American craft beer amazing.  That being said, with German beer having traditionally stuck so close to the "purity" of the process has made them very strong brewers in the skills needed to make great beer. The craft beer revolution that has happened else where is also happening here in Germany. Along with the traditional amazing lagers you will also find unique ales and other types of beer that will keep your thirst quenched after a long, or even a short, days riding.

Speaking of Lager, this is one of the most tried and true styles of beer. A good lager is refreshing and delightful. It also has many different nuances that come from the lagering process and the use of specialty malts that add character otherwise not found in many of the hoppy ales we have come to drink in the states. A walk through the beer aisle here in Berlin and you will find a huge selection of beer to choose from. The breweries here also love to have you visit and learn about what they do and what makes them different than the rest. Many of the craft brewers make only one or two beers so that they can focus on doing what they do really well.

Germany has more going for it on the beer spectrum than just Oktoberfest and I would love to share that with you. If you are looking for a bike tour that takes in wonderful car free cycle paths, quality beer, spirits and wine along with a rich and long history with beautiful countryside this may be the place for you.  Our tours here are at a calm pace, we can go fast if you want to, and also have the ability to use E-bikes for those concerned with enjoying the ride or in need of a bit of assistance. Our trips here also make for great family vacations because almost every brewery or biergarten has a playground or something fun for the kids to do as well.
